Daphne Oram (1925 - 2003)
Daphne Oram, born in England, was the first full time electronic music composer in Britain. Working for the BBC, she founded and was the first director, in 1958, of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, a part of the drama department, where electronic sound and music were composed. Afterwards, she set her own electronic music studio in Kent, where she developed her own system of electronic sound production, the Oramics - one that converted shapes into sound - which was operational since 1966.

(apologies for the bad quality of the video, but it is hard to find captures of Daphne, herself, talking about her work)
Daphne Oram - Pulse Persephone
"With the whole world of sound to explore, who wants to hear just sine and square waves? It would be rather like eating watery porridge, together with ginger snaps, for every meal!"
